Usucha is the most common preparation of matcha, producing a smooth, frothy cup that balances matcha's distinctive flavors. With the right technique, you can create cafe-quality matcha at home.
Essential Equipment
- Chawan (tea bowl)
- Chasen (bamboo whisk)
- Chashaku (bamboo scoop)
Step-by-Step Process
- Warm your chawan with hot water, then discard water
- Using a chashaku, measure 2 scoops (approximately 2g) of matcha
- Sift matcha into the bowl to remove clumps
- Add 2oz (60ml) of water at the proper temperature
- Hold the bowl steady with your non-dominant hand
- Whisk in a "W" or "M" motion rapidly for 15-20 seconds
- Finish with small surface movements to create fine foam
- Enjoy immediately before foam subsides
